The concentration camp in Auschwitz was established by German Nazis on the outskirts of the town Oswiecim in 1940. After the war, the camp was turned into museum displaying evidence of the genocide. Block no. 11, known as the Death Block, was where people were murdered also at the “Wall of Death”. Outside the camp, there is a gas chamber, where 70,000 people were killed in 1940-1943. A film made after the liberation of the camp is shown in various language version in the museum. In 1941, 3 kilometres from Oswiecim, in the former village of Brzezinka, the German Nazis established a new camp called Auschwitz II Birkenau. In 1942-1945, approx. 1.5 million people lived and died here. Most of them (90%) were Jews, others were Poles, Gypsies, Russians and prisoners from 28 countries of Europe, people of all nationalities and political and religious persuasions. Since 1944, transports of prisoners from all over the continent entered directly through the “Gate of Death”. In 1979, Auschwitz – Birkenau Concentration Campwas listed a UNESCO World Culture and National Heritage Site

Everything was excellent except the transportation. The vehicle was too tight for 9 persons. The guide in Auschwitz was super :-).

I’m still pinching myself! I know how real this history is but how could it ever happen? This tour was informative and conducted by a well educated guide. You have to see it to fully appreciate.

We booked our tickets online and had good communication in advance of the actual excursion. The driver was on time and friendly. We were glad that we didn’t need to find the Auschwitz sites on our own because you need to wind your way through various twists and turns to get there. Our actual tour guide at Auschwitz was amazing and we learned a lot. The whole experience was sobering but worth it. My only small critique is that the driver tried to avoid a traffic jam on the way back to Warsaw and we ended up taking rough back roads that took us an additional 1.5 hours to get back. If it hadn’t been for that, I would have given a 5/5.

The drive was wonderful and the conversation with driver and group insightful. However, the scorchingly hot day made the tour at Auschwitz itself rushed, stuffy and guide too irritated to allow us to contemplate the atrocities committed there. It was nonetheless a profound and insightful visit. The weather also cut short our tour of Birkenau. Do not go in the height of Summer.
