Civita di Bagnoregio and Orvieto - Private Day trip from Rome

Get picked up in Rome in the morning and travel roughly 75 minutes north of the city for your first stop of the day - Orvieto.

Orvieto is perched on a plateau of soft volcanic rock that was once an island in the sea covering the Paglia Valley below. Here, you will have time to explore one of the finest Duomos in Italy, a gem of Gothic architecture, and take an hour-long tour of the underground city with its winding tunnels and Etruscan artifacts. This tour allows you to explore 3,000 years of history by following the ancient passageways, tunnels, stairs, and hidden rooms.

Another important stop is St. Patrick’s Well, built on the orders of Pope Clement VII who sought refuge here during the sacking of Rome. This 203-feet deep well showcases double-spiraled staircases for easier access to the water. In Orvieto, you will experience a delightful lunch (own expense) with delicious local wine.

After exploring this charming town with amazing views, you will head to Civita Bagnoregio, an almost deserted town accessible only by a foot bridge. With only 25-50 inhabitants, it sometimes feels like a ghost town. Here, you can stroll the narrow streets, and marvel at the existence of a place where time stopped several hundred years ago.

You will also be able to enjoy a visit to an ancient olive oil press, originally built by the Etruscans from this area. This tour will allow you to explore the unique history of this fascinating area. This tour length is approximately 9 hours in total and is conducted by an English-speaking driver/guide that will not enter sites but drive you around and show you places, pointing out things while explaining what they are, as well as stopping at the places that require a visit and helping you access them.

At the end of the tour we will return to Rome.
