Meet your local guide by the Starbucks at the Brandenburg Gate and hop on a train to see the parts of Berlin that are outside the shiny city centre.

Berlin was stranded behind the iron curtain for nearly 40 years. As such, West Berlin developed its own unique identity and became a magnet for non-conformists in search of an alternative lifestyle. Sub-cultures, squats, and graffiti art became part of Berlin’s distinct style, and with the fall of the Berlin Wall the scene didn’t disappear, it simply moved east.

At the East Side Gallery, your guide will introduce you to the different kinds of street art, such as the paste-ups and the stencils. You'll also hear about some of Berlin's most famous street artists and the history behind this world-known open air gallery.

See the famous Fraternal Kiss graffiti and hear about how the fall of the Berlin Wall gave rise to Berlin's unique alternative scene.

As you walk across the eastern side, you guide will also tell you about the particular nightlife in the German capital, which has given this city the title of the best nightlife in the world.

While you keep moving East, you'll get a further insight about Berlin's underground scene. Hear about the numerous protests that have taken place in the city and find out how the locals have rebel against gentrification.

Went on the English alternative Berlin walk in medium to pouring rain on April 12 with Leene sic as tour guide. She was extremely knowledgeable with first hand information about various alternative and independent sites for art and innovative housing projects around east Berlin. Her stories were peppered with anecdotes and history with a definite indie and start up artistic bent which brought life to the places we visited. One word of caution is that although there is lots of street art, this is not the total focus there's much information on the development of the real estate scene in Berlin as well as how Berlin is changing. The tour is directed toward young people who will come away with clubs and locations to visit and party at and eventhough we were thoroughly soaked by the end of 3 hours, she had lost very few members of the group due to her enthusiasm and expertise.
